Firewise

The Firewise USA® program is active in Bend and throughout Oregon, offering communities a structured approach to reduce wildfire risks. Administered nationally by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the program emphasizes community collaboration to enhance the ignition resistance of homes and neighborhoods

Firewise in Bend & Deschutes County

 

Deschutes County is a leader in Firewise participation. As of early 2025, the county boasts 78 active Firewise-recognized communities, ranking it fifth nationally. These communities have collectively invested over $19 million in mitigation efforts, including fuel reduction, home hardening, and educational outreach. 

 

In Bend, the City supports Firewise initiatives by offering free permits for placing dumpsters on city rights-of-way during community cleanup events. Additionally, Bend Fire & Rescue provides property assessments to help homeowners identify and mitigate wildfire risks. Learn more
